Socials – Sim City Experience

We played Sim City for two lessons, we created and designed a functioning city. The game helped demonstrate how difficult a city would be to build and maintain, we needed to think about the plumbing systems and power. The problems in which I faced while creating the city helped me see what is required in reality. The city required hospitals, fire stations, schools, recreation, entertainment, power plants, roads, highways, buildings and much more. These all cost money, it is a case of balancing it’s cost with it’s potential capabilities. There was a huge requirement for power, without power building is not possible, lighting is not possible, heating is not possible. In this game there is a requirement for water, this is a requirement for houses and buildings. Sim City somewhat demonstrated how difficult a city would be to create and maintain in real life. The only thing this does not include is resource consumption and resource limits. In reality the world suffers from overpopulation and energy shortages. This is not included in the game. The game has realistic problems such as fire and crime, however if the necessary facilities are built it should not be a problem. The game is good as it has many realistic problems but it could do with more improvement but is a good game.

English Matrix – Research and make notes about a main theme in the book.

Social Groups

Socs – The Socs were the rich kids. They lived on the West Side. The Socs were always getting drunk and looking for fights with greasers. The Greasers always thought that the Socs had it better than them, but they find out that the Socs are cool to the point of not feeling anything. They find out that the Socs have it just as rough as they do. All of the Socs drove corvettes and wore madras. They got everything they wanted, but had to be cool.

Greasers – The greasers were poorer than the Socs or the Middle Class. They were wilder, too. When a Soc or Middle Class person saw a greaser, they immediately thought dirty troublemaker. They loved to hang out in gangs, but their kinds of gangs were a group of friends.. The Socs were always drinking and jumping the greasers.

Social Groups in this story is a huge theme, without them there would be none rivalries or fights. The social groups also pose as an obstacle for Pony and many others. More note on social groups are in the essay at the top.

English Matrix – Create or re-write a song to link a character with

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

I’m begging of you please don’t take my hand

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

Please don’t take me just because you can

Your beauty is beyond compare

With flaming locks of auburn hair

With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green

Your smile is like a breath of spring

Your voice is soft like summer rain

And I cannot continue with you, Cherry

He haunts me in my sleep

There’s nothing I can do to keep

From crying when he calls your name, Cherry

And I can easily understand

How you could easily take my hand

But you don’t know what you means to me, Cherry

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

I’m begging of you please don’t take my hand

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

Please don’t take me just because you can

You could have your choice of men

But I could never love again

He’s the only one for me, Cherry

I had to have this talk with you

My happiness depends on you

And whatever you decide to do, Cherry

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

I’m begging of you please don’t take my hand

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry, Cherry

Please don’t take me even though you can

Cherry, Cherry

English Matrix – Write an evaluation of the book

I feel the book was very well written, it was not a very challenging read but it was a very interesting book none the less. I enjoyed the book because it was interesting and had a strong plot. The plot had many themes and morals to it, all of which were very understandable. The book had a way of making me feel connected with the characters and It was very easy for me imagine that I was there. I would personally change the end, I would have ended it with an agreement between the Socs and the Greasers and a truce to be formed. I feel the struggles of all the characters were good but I would have wanted a final result where they can all make up and form a passive relationship between each other. The book had many scenes where I felt strongly connected emotionally. I could also relate to a few emotions and feelings of the characters during the book. It was a great read for a teenager.

English Matrix – Create 5 questions to show that you have learnt something during the book.

  1. Name a very prominent theme in the book. Social groups are a very big theme in this book, if anything it is the biggest theme in the book. Many problems in this book are caused by the rivalry between the Socs and Greasers. Quite a few of the most important scenes in this book are between the two social groups.
  2. List 7 characters from the book and whether they are Soc or Greaser. Darry (Greaser), Pony (Greaser), Sodapop (Greaser), Bob (Soc), Cherry (Soc), Dally (Greaser), Randy (Soc).
  3. Describe how Pony views Darry at the start and the end of the book. Pony loves Darry because they are brothers but he dislikes how Darry is so hard on him and wants him to do well. Pony feels like Darry doesn’t want him so he runs away, When they are reunited he realises that Darry is so hard on him because he cares about him and wants him to succeed and do well.
  4. Name the characters that died and how they died. Dally died after being chased by the police for robbing a grocery store, they chased him down and shot him. Bob was killed by Johnny when Bob tried to kill Ponyboy. Johnny dies in hospital after getting burnt by a fire trying to save some children.
  5. Describe and explain what you took out of the story. I took out that there is no reason to judge someone because of their social status or their affiliations. I also realised that sometimes it may seem that you are not wanted and that you are pushed too hard but it is normally because they care and want you to do well.

English Matrix – Write a paragraph to show the changes a character goes through

Ponyboy goes from being a shy and emotional greaser who is scared of losing his family to a toughened greaser who doesn’t fear anything. He faces many challenges along the story, he loses many close friends and family. He has many hardships and many battles, emotional and physical. He gets jumped by the Socs that affect him emotionally and make him more susceptible to emotional damage. He becomes a bit of an emotional wreck after he gets hit by Darry, he then almost gets drowned by the Socs. He gets emotionally and physically weakened by all this commotion and problems. He also watches Johnny die and get burnt, he watches Dally get shot and he watches Bob get killed. Pony witnesses many things that made him weaker emotionally and physically but in the long term it made him stronger. Ponyboy becomes tougher, and this is shown when he threatens the Socs with a broken soda bottle. Stay gold.
